Inside the CEFROHT Cafeteria, the podcast where food, health, and the law finally sit at the same table.
“The moment you see fast food, you should worry.”
That was Dr. David Kabanda, our Executive Director, on The CEFROHT Cafeteria. It is not the kind of line you hear on a billboard. That is precisely why we started a podcast.
Walk through any Ugandan town today and count the packaged snacks, sugary drinks, and fried fast foods. They are cheap, convenient, and advertised everywhere. What they rarely come with is honest information. Families are left choosing in the dark, and the people selling the food are the ones holding the torch.
So in April we switched on the lights. The CEFROHT Cafeteria brings nutrition, public health, agroecology and the law into one easy conversation for parents, young people, consumers and policymakers. No lectures. No shaming. Just the facts, served warm.
What has been on the menu
The first episodes followed Uganda’s nutrition transition, the steady slide from matooke, millet and greens towards ultra-processed food. Dr. Kabanda separated fact from fiction on fast foods, and a deep dive into industrial trans fats asked why bread, cakes and crisps can carry them without a clear label. We have a right to know what is in our food.
This quarter the table got even more personal.
We asked a question many families have whispered: why are young people dying suddenly? Too often a death is dismissed as “slipping in the bathroom.” The episode explored the silent heart and blood vessel conditions that can strike without warning, and the role diet plays in them.
In August we followed children from the home kitchen to the school canteen. At home it is matooke. At school it is a packet of something bright and crunchy. Who shapes those habits, parents, schools or the institutions around them? And how do we make better choices without banning every treat?
And on World Heart Day in September we asked the bluntest question yet: are you eating yourself into heart failure? The episode tackled margarine and industrial trans fats, which the World Health Organization says offer no nutritional benefit, and what they mean for mothers, babies and everyone with a heart.
Food is never just food. It is health, children’s wellbeing, consumer rights, advertising, culture and law, all on one plate.
Why does a legal organization make a podcast?
Because laws change faster when people understand why they matter. Every episode connects the plate to the policy behind it: the trans-fat regulation we are pushing with the Ministry of Health, the front-of-pack warning labels that would tell you what is really inside a product, and the right to adequate food that underpins all our work. An informed public is the strongest advocate any law can have.
The conversation does not stay in the studio either. Short clips travel on X and LinkedIn, so you can catch a minute of truth on your lunch break or between meetings.
