
Dr. Kabanda David (PhD)Executive Director
Dr. Kabanda David (PhD) is a distinguished food rights lawyer with a strong commitment to social justice and trade-related systems. His work spans legal advocacy, community legal empowerment, public interest litigation, and legal research, with a focus on advancing social equity and the doctrine of public trust. As an expert in food law and sustainable agri-food systems, he has provided consultancy services to prominent international organizations, including the UN-FAO, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, WHO, and UNESCO. Additionally, he has successfully implemented projects funded by SIDA, UNDP, SDC, OSF, the Hewlett Foundation, and the Avaaz Foundation.
A holder of a PhD in Food Law from the University of Western Cape, Dr. Kabanda has been a trailblazer in health litigation and legal frameworks in Uganda and East Africa, particularly in maternal health. His groundbreaking work has extended to the justiciability and realization of the right to food, significantly shaping jurisprudence in Uganda, East Africa, and across the continent.
A dedicated advocate for social rights, Dr. Kabanda has founded impactful organizations such as the Center for Health, Human Rights and Development (CEHURD) and the Center for Food and Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT), where he currently serves as Executive Director. He also contributes to civil society as a board member of several CSOs and shares his expertise as a lecturer at Nkumba University School of Law and Kyambogo University’s Faculty of Food Technology and Nutrition.
His career is marked by a steadfast dedication to social inclusion and accountability through human rights-based approaches. He has played a pivotal role in shaping laws and policies related to food and health rights, ensuring systemic change.
As a leader in human rights advocacy, Dr. Kabanda heads the Agriculture and Food Law Cluster under the Uganda Law Society, guiding a team of lawyers across East Africa. He has spearheaded numerous campaigns, including those for the right to food, livelihood rights, maternal health, access to medicines, a clean and healthy environment, a smoke-free environment, improved utilities in hospitals, mental health rights, and access to information—all aimed at fostering accountability among duty-bearers.
