East African Legislative Assembly and FAO Adopt Agroecology as Strategic Priority

KAMPALA, Uganda – The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have signed a landmark resolution recognizing agroecology as a key strategy for sustainable agriculture, tourism, and natural resource management in the region. The agreement was formalized during a capacity-building workshop in Kampala, supported by the United Nations’ FAO.

The resolution addresses critical challenges in agrifood systems and emphasizes collaborative efforts to integrate agroecology into regional policies. EALA’s Committee on Agriculture, Tourism, and Natural Resources (ATNR) has called on FAO to assist in developing legal frameworks to advance sustainable farming practices.

Hon. Françoise Uwumukiza, Chairperson of EALA’s ATNR Committee, hailed the resolution as a pivotal move toward ecological sustainability and food security. She emphasized the Assembly’s dedication to ending hunger by 2030 while safeguarding environmental and community welfare.

Jean-Leonard Touadi, FAO’s Special Coordinator of Parliamentary Networks, underscored the importance of the partnership, stating that continued collaboration with EALA would drive progress in agroecological adoption.
