EAST AFRICA– The East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Committee on Agriculture, Tourism, and Natural Resources (ATNR) reviewed a presentation by CEFROHT highlighting agroecology as a key solution for the region’s pressing challenges. The discussion emphasized the need for robust legal and policy frameworks to advance agroecological practices.
The meeting outlined agroecology’s potential to tackle interconnected issues such as food insecurity, climate change, biodiversity decline, and social inequity. Experts noted its benefits in fostering healthy diets, enhancing community resilience, safeguarding the environment, and boosting local economies. A key takeaway was the call for a regional policy to systematically integrate agroecology across East Africa.
CEFROHT urged committee members to endorse the proposed policy, framing it as a critical measure to improve food security, uphold seed and food sovereignty, and elevate community well-being.
