Agroecology in Action: CEFROHT’s Agroecology Learning Center, A model for Sustainable Livelihoods.

In our continued pursuit of building resilient, people-centered food systems, CEFROHT has established the CEFROHT-Naggalama Agroecology Learning Center as a Social Enterprise that empowers smallholder women farmers in agroecology practice. Through this, CEFROHT is demonstrating how agroecology can powerfully link climate adaptation, women’s empowerment, and sustainable livelihoods.

The learning center integrates agroecological dairy farming with crop agronomy in a circular model that converts manure into clean biogas energy and nutrient-rich bio-slurry for soil enrichment. This system reduces reliance on expensive and harmful chemical fertilizers while promoting soil restoration and environmental conservation. As a result, women farmers are producing food sustainably, generating income, and contributing to community energy supply.

As a social enterprise, the center enables women to produce, process, and market milk and high-value organic vegetables for income generation. With over 100 liters of milk produced daily against a market demand of more than 600 liters, the enterprise shows strong economic potential and local demand for organic and sustainably produced foods. Beyond income generation, the initiative is restoring soil health, strengthening food sovereignty, and reviving indigenous farming knowledge and cultural pride.

What we have done:

To meet the growing demand, CEFROHT continues to mobilize and train smallholder women and youth farmers, equipping them with agroecological skills, indigenous inputs, and traditional knowledge sharing to support sustainable production.

The Learning Center stands as a beacon of how agroecology can drive economic, social, and environmental transformation, proving that sustainable farming is both practical and profitable.
