CEFROHT strengthened its advocacy for a sustainable and more just food system across the East African Community (EAC). Alongside high-level policy dialogues, CEFROHT held strategic discussions with the Heinrich Böll Foundation to explore collaborative avenues for enhancing regional agroecology policy and legal frameworks.
The conversations highlighted the need for a coherent regional legislative and governance approach to highly hazardous pesticides, seed sovereignty, biofertilizers, fair markets, and climate resilience within the EAC. Key priorities include reducing reliance on harmful agrochemicals, promoting farmer-led ecological pest management, strengthening regional trade in safe and nutritious foods, and grounding regional harmonized agricultural policies in human rights and environmental stewardship.
These engagements come at a pivotal moment as East Africa faces rising pesticide misuse, food insecurity challenges, and increasing vulnerability to climate shocks among smallholder farmers. With growing alignment among civil society, policymakers, and community movements, momentum for the agroecological transition is accelerating in East Africa.
Through strategic partnerships and elevating regional agroecology discussions, CEFROHT is contributing to a future where healthy food is recognized as a right, farmers are empowered, ecosystems are restored, and the EAC positions itself as a leader in sustainable and equitable agricultural governance.
