In a powerful affirmation of CEFROHT’s advocacy for healthier food environments, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Right to Food has written to the Government of Uganda, calling for urgent action to protect the right to adequate food. This comes in response to efforts by CEFROHT, whose persistent engagement has highlighted critical gaps in Uganda’s food and nutrition laws and policies.
The letter is not just a formality; it is a global spotlight on national responsibility. It urges the government to adopt an evidence-based Nutrient Profile Model (NPM), strengthen regulations on the marketing of unhealthy foods to children, and ensure that policies such as Front of Pack Warning Labelling are passed and implemented. These recommendations are steps that can transform Uganda’s food environment, making healthy, nutritious food accessible for all.
CEFROHT’s advocacy journey shows that civil society voices can influence international mechanisms. This is a concrete example of how knowledge-driven advocacy shapes policy, and why partnerships between local organizations and global institutions matter.
This letter also sends a message to policymakers that the world is watching, and the right to food is not negotiable. It highlights the urgent need for Uganda to move from discussion to action, passing legislation, enforcing regulations, and safeguarding the health and nutrition of its citizens.
For citizens and stakeholders, this is a moment to stay informed, get involved, and hold institutions accountable. CEFROHT will continue to work with Parliament, government agencies, and partners to ensure that the recommendations in this letter are translated into actionable food policies and laws that protect the right to adequate food.
