In a historic move, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) Agriculture, Tourism and Natural Resources (ATNR) Committee recently adopted a groundbreaking resolution recognising agroecology as a strategic priority—a major step forward in the region’s journey towards resilient, sustainable food systems.
This resolution, passed during the capacity-building event held from 13th to 15th November 2025, has sparked unprecedented momentum for regional legal reform. Riding on this wave of political will, the Centre for Food and Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT) has officially kickstarted conversations with the EALA ATNR Committee aimed at formulating the East African Model Law on Agroecology.
Together with stakeholders, CEFROHT is also spearheading the development of a regional roadmap to guide the transition from industrial agriculture to agroecology. This roadmap is set to align with East Africa’s legal and institutional frameworks, ensuring coherence and sustainability across the board.
Stakeholders across the region have voiced strong support for the formulation and harmonisation of agroecology legal frameworks across EAC Partner States, recognising varying national contexts and stages of adoption, as well as the creation of a regional oversight mechanism to assess and align national policies with agroecological principles.
