Harare, Zimbabwe – The Center for Food and Adequate Living Rights (CEFROHT) has established the Agroecology Legal Network for Africa (ALNA) to bolster legal frameworks supporting agroecology across the continent. The announcement was made during the Agroecology African Learning Exchange held in Zimbabwe.
Africa faces a deepening food security crisis, exacerbated by climate shocks, inflation, and conflict, leaving millions severely food-insecure. Agroecology presents a viable solution, yet its adoption remains hampered by weak policies and legal barriers.
To address this gap, ALNA seeks to strengthen legal advocacy and foster collaboration among civil society organizations (CSOs), governments, and development partners. The network will work to align existing legal obligations with sustainable agri-food systems, ensuring agroecology gains traction as a key strategy against climate change, malnutrition, and hunger.
Unlike industrial agriculture, which has drawn significant financial and legal support, agroecology has struggled to attract legal expertise. ALNA aims to mobilize lawyers committed to social justice and sustainable food systems, providing legal aid to farmers, policymakers, and advocacy groups in policy formulation, litigation, and documentation.
The network is now officially registered and invites lawyers and agroecology organizations to join its efforts.
